First and last experience with a Ouija board

We had only been at the party for a couple minutes when my friend told me there was a Ouija board in one of the back rooms that some people were messing with.

My buddy and I had heard of these things but had never seen one in action, so we cruised back and found a small group of people crowded around the board trying to get it to work.

Being close to high school graduation we’d already developed a healthy skepticism for a lot of things, and we looked at each other with the same thought, this thing was a total joke.  No way something made by Parker Brothers and sold for $30 at Toys ‘R Us was real.

After watching others try to get it to work, some clearly pretending to move it to freak everyone out, we decided to get on just the two of us.  We knew if it moved with just us then it was definitely real, but figured we would quickly find it was fake and get back to the party and on with the night.

After maybe a minute of having our hands on it, it started to move.  And not a twitchy kind of movement, it was a strong, smooth movement in a continuous circle around the board.  In fact, it was moving so fast at times that we had a hard time keeping our finger tips on it. 

Pretty crazy we thought, definitely something going on here that we had to get to the bottom of.  And no way were either of us moving that thing, I trusted my friend with my life and I sure as hell wasn’t moving it myself.

So we started asking it all the usual questions, and got a bunch of usual responses, nothing memorable.  We then turned the line of questioning to the board itself.  That’s when things went way wrong.

Even though it’s been over 20 years, I still remember how the next several minutes played out word for word …

Q:  Why are you talking to us?
R:  I get rewarded
Q:  Who rewards you?
R:  Satan
Q:  So if you were us, would you be using a Ouija board to talk to you?
R:  No
Q:  Won’t you get in trouble for warning us like this?
R:  Yes
Q:  What type of punishment will you get?
R:  WATCH BABIES BURN

When it finished that last sentence and we realized what it spelled, my buddy and I turned white.  Definitely the most sick and twisted thing we’d ever heard in our lives.  We immediately bolted out of the room.  It was weeks before I was sleeping well again, couldn’t get that last sentence out of my head. 

That night cleared up two things, though, it was most certainly real and most definitely not good.  That was enough for us to never touch one again.
